EDITION 2026 — ENUGU PHOTO FESTIVAL
Initiation
A passage into knowledge, belonging, and the responsibility of images.
WHAT IS INITIATION
Initiation
is a passage.
Across cultures, initiation marks the movement from one stage of life to another: from childhood to adulthood, from outsider to member, from observer to participant.
It is the process through which knowledge is transmitted, responsibility is assigned, and identity is formed.
In many communities across Eastern Nigeria, initiation has never been merely symbolic. It is embedded in family structures, age-grade systems, apprenticeship traditions, religious practice, naming ceremonies, and rites of belonging.
To be initiated is to be introduced into a shared world — one shaped by memory, expectation, discipline, and care.
Learning to Read the World
Initiation teaches how to see, how to speak, how to behave, how to interpret signs.
Before the photograph, societies learned to read walls, bodies, cloth, and symbols. Patterns carried meaning. Scarification marked transition. Architectural forms signaled status. Gesture revealed hierarchy. Cloth spoke of lineage.
Space itself functioned as language.
To be initiated was to be taught how to read these signs.
Why Initiation Now?
We live in an age saturated with images.
Photographs circulate instantly. Symbols detach from context. Visual culture travels faster than the communities that created it.
Yet while images multiply, the structures that once guided interpretation weaken.
The 2026 edition of the Enugu Photo Festival asks:
What does initiation mean in an era of constant visibility?
How do we become responsible image-makers and image-readers?
If initiation once prepared individuals to enter society, what prepares us to enter the visual world we now inhabit?
